Road Trip Garden-Morris Arboretum

Philadelphia, PA

Another jewel in the ‘Pennsylvania Plant-Geek Paradise Region’ is Morris Arboretum. Compton, the summer home of brother and sister John and Lydia Morris in 1887, became the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania in 1932.

The 92-acre arboretum, listed on The National Register of Historic Places, is recognized as the official arboretum of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Besides fantastic specimen trees, Morris includes more intensive garden areas such as the Rose garden, created in 1888, and the Victorian Fernery, originally built in 1899.

What I love about this garden;

Even though I consider myself a hard-core Tree-Geek, Morris has a little something for every Plant-Geek, like the Rose Garden, Fernery, and Natural areas. The Fairy Woods and Garden Railway are charming ways for kids to interact with nature. The Tree Canopy Walk rekindles a child-like wonder and uncontrollable desire to build a tree house in your backyard once you get home. Notable tree specimens are an impressive Katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum), Dawn redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides Top photo), and a stunning Blue atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica var. Glauca).
