June Perennial of the Month-Cranesbill geranium
In 2015 Geranium x cantabrigiense ‘Biokovo’ was voted Perennial Plant Association’s Plant of the Year. Even without the title, gardeners have loved this perennial for years, and I can’t imagine my garden without it. Masses of deep rose flowers blanket the low-growing foliage from late spring to mid-summer. In fall, the aromatic foliage takes on a red tint. What more can you ask from a perennial?
It’s sometimes sold as ‘Biokovo Karmina’ or just ‘Karmina’. Either name gives you dainty pink flowers and charming, wavy-leaved, pubescent foliage. This Cranesbill makes an excellent groundcover and is drought tolerant once established. A great addition to a woodland garden. It will tolerate full sun, but shade from the late afternoon St. Louis sun is a must.
-Geranium x cantabrigiense ‘St. Ola’ has the same creeping habit and charm but blooms white with a slight pink tint.
Why I love this plant-deer and rabbit resistant. Takes shade/part shade, fragrant foliage and nice fall color. Absolutely charming with or without flowers. Stays under 1′ high and spreads into a thick mass.
What’s not so great? It spreads by trailing stems which can be a pro or con depending on your situation. Easy to divide to keep in line if needed.
