July Anti-Tree of the Month-Golden Rain Tree

Once upon a time, I came to visit my mother-in-law, and before I could make it to the front door, her neighbor ran out of her house, grabbed me by the hand, saying. “YOU’VE GOT TO SEE THIS TREE!”

I was then kidnapped, and driven around the block, where we stopped in front of a mature, slightly twisted tree absolutely dripping with golden flowers, a dusting of gold petals circling its base. It was a literal traffic-stopper as we idled there blocking traffic while she gushed and swooned. Once safely back in her driveway, I had the sad task of telling her that her golden dream tree was instead a golden nightmare.

Golden rain trees, Koelreuteria paniculata, can grow 30-40′ tall and wide. So, you can imagine when it’s in bloom, people notice. The flowers are soon followed by unique 2-3” papery seed capsules that start out green, then fade to brown-also very noticeable. Showy even. But what most admirers of this tree do not notice is just how invasive, not to mention messy, these trees are. Those cool little paper-lantern-like seed pods typically hold 3 seeds each, but I tell you, 12 germinate.

The unique pinnate or bipinnate compound leaves are the telltale sign in the seedlings sprouting up across the neighborhood, in gutters, sidewalk cracks, and flower beds.

Commonly used as a street tree for its drought tolerance and low maintenance, it has since been nixed by most U.S. cities coast to coast because of its invasive nature.

For a flowering alternative in a full sun situation, there are options;
